Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian freedom fighter. He is always remembered for hoisting the Congress flag at the Gowalia Maidan in Mumbai during the Quit India Movement in 1942. Aruna ji got his initial education in Nainital. It was very intelligent and very clever in writing studies.

Aruna ji was born on 16 July 1909 in a Bengali family in Kalka Village, Punjab. His childhood name was "Aruna Ganguly". He was from Brahmin caste. His mother's name was Ambalika Devi and father's name was Upendranath Ganguly. His father owned a hotel in Nainital which he owned.

She came out of underground life in 1946 AD after a gap of two years, the elected President of the Congress Committee. After coming out of the underground life, Mrs. Aruna Asaf Ali was elected President of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 1947 AD. He strengthened the Congress organization in Delhi. In 1948, Mrs. Aruna Asaf Ali joined the "Socialist Party" in the Socialist Party from the Congress and two years later in 1950, she formed a separate 'Left Specialist Party' and she became active in the "Labor-Movement" Finally, the party merged with the "Indian Communist Party" in 1955. Mrs. Aruna Asaf Ali was a member of the Central Committee of the CPI and Vice President of the 'All India Trade Union Congress' in the CPI. . He also left the "Marxist Communist Party" in 1958 AD. After the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, she again joined the "Congress Party", but was no more active. First Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation, Smt. Aruna Asaf Ali was elected the first Mayor of "Municipal Corporation of Delhi" in 1958 AD. As Mayor, he did a great job for Delhi's development, cleanliness, and health etc. and he also made substantial improvements in the functioning of the municipal corporation.


Aruna Asaf Ali was awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize for the year 1964 and the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1991. He was awarded India's second highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan and finally the highest civilian award in his lifetime in 1992, Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1997.
