Bachendri Pal faced stiff opposition from his family and relatives but still decided to choose a career as a professional climber rather than a schoolteacher. And he also soon found success in his chosen field. After a summit of several small peaks, he was selected to join India's first mixed-gender team in 1984 for a campaign on Mount Everest.
