Devika Rani is an actress in Hindi films. His contribution has been very important for Indian cinema. After finishing school education, in the early 1920s, Devika Rani moved to London to pursue theatrical education and was admitted to institutions such as the "Royal Academy of Dramatic Art" (RADA) and the Royal 'Academy of Music ". Devika Rani was sent to a boarding school in England at the age of nine, and grew up there. After completing his schooling in the mid-1920s, he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music in London to study acting and music. She enrolled in courses in architecture, textile and decoration design, and even received an apprenticeship under Elizabeth Arden. Each of these courses was completed a few months ago, by 1927, and Devika Rani then worked in textile design.
During the study period, Devika Rani met Himanshu Rai. Himanshu Rai made Devika Rani the set designer for the first production of Light of Asia. In 1929, they got married. After the wedding, Himanshu Rai got the job of a producer at the famous UFA studio in Germany to produce a film called "A Throw of Dice" and came to Germany. In India too, cinematography was developing in those days, so Himanshu Rai thought of making films in his country and returned home with Devika Rani. After coming to India, she started making films and in her films Devika Rani started working as a heroine. Her film Karma was released in 1933 and became so popular that people started calling Devika Rani a star instead of an artist. In this way Devika Rani became the first female film star of Indian cinema. Devika Rani and her husband Himanshu Rai together established the Bombay Talkies Studio, the first film studio in India. The Bombay Talkies were equipped with the latest equipment from the time they were sourced from Germany. Great artists like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala have worked in Bombay Talkies. Extremely popular films like Untouchable Girl, Kismet, Shaheed, Mela have been made there. She has been much discussed about the film Untouchable Girl as it was based on the love affair of an untouchable girl and a Brahmin youth. After retiring from films, Devika Rani married Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich in 1945, the son of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. After marriage, the couple moved to Manali in Himachal Pradesh, where they became acquainted with the Nehru family. During her stay in Manali, Devika Rani made some documentaries on wildlife. After living in Manali for a few years, he moved to Bangalore, Karnataka, and managed an export company there. The couple bought 450 acres (1,800,000 m2) of property on the outskirts of the city and lived a solitary life for the remainder of their lives.
In 1958, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Devika Rani. The greatest honor in Indian cinema was the 'Dadasaheb Phalke Award' (1970). Devika was awarded the 'Soviet Land Nehru Award "by Soviet Russia in 1990. In February 2011, a postage stamp was also issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in his memory.
