Laxmi Sehgal was a fighter for India's freedom struggle. She was an officer of Azad Hind Fauj and Minister of Women Affairs in Azad Hind Government.

Lakshmi Sehgal was born on 24 October 1914 in Madras in a traditional Tamil family. His childhood name was Lakshmi Swaminath. His father's name is S. Swaminathan and mother's name was Avi Amukkutty. His father was a well-known lawyer of the Madras High Court. His mother Ammu Swaminathan was a social worker and a well-known freedom fighter family from Kerala.
Laxmi Sehgal died on 23 July 2012 (age 97) due to cardiac arrest in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. His body was donated to Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College for medical research.
Sehgal studied at Queen Mary College and later opted to study medicine and received an MBBS degree from Madras Medical College in 1938. A year later, she received a diploma in gynecology and obstetrics. She also worked as a doctor at the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Triplicane, Chennai.

Lakshmi Sehgal was one of the founding members of the Indian 'People's Women Committee ". In 1942, during the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese by the British, Sehgal wounded prisoners of war, many of whom were interested in forming the Indian Independence Army. At this time many nationalist Indians were working in Singapore, including KP Keshav Menon, SC Guha and N. Raghavan, who formed the Working Council. In 971, Sehgal joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) And represented the party in the Rajya Sabha. During the Bangladesh crisis, he organized relief camps and medical aid in Calcutta for refugees arriving in India from Bangladesh.

She was one of the founding members of the All India Democratic Women's Association in 1981 and led many of its activities and campaigns. She led a medical team in Bhopal after the gas tragedy in December 1984, worked towards restoring peace in Kanpur after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and in 1996 in a campaign against the Miss World competition in Bangalore He was arrested.


In 1998, Sehgal was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by Indian President KR Narayanan. In 2010, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Calicut University.
