Mahadev Govind Ranade was an Indian judge, writer and social reformer of the British era. He is called "Socrates of Maharashtra". Ranade actively participated in social reform work. The Prarthana Samaj, Arya Samaj and Brahmo Samaj had a great influence on their lives.

Govind Ranade was born on 18 January 1842 in Pune, Maharashtra (India). His father's name was Govind Amrit Ranade. His father was a minister.
Mahadev Govind Ranade died on 16 January 1901 (age 58 years) in Mumbai.
He studied in a Marathi school in Kolhapur and later shifted to an English-medium school. At the age of 14, he went to study at Elphinstone College, Bombay. He belonged to the first batch of students at Bombay University. He received his BA degree in 1862 and LLB four years later. LLB First place in the class of He passed the entrance examination in first class from the University of Mumbai and his study was included in 21 meritorious students.
After receiving his law degree (LLB) in 1866, Ranade became a subordinate judge in Pune in 1871. Given his political activities, British colonial authorities delayed his promotion to the Bombay High Court until 1895. Mahadev Govind Ranade supported the establishment of "Indian National Congress". In 1943, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar praised Ranade, giving him the status of anti-Gandhi and Jinah. Mahadev Govind Ranade was elected as the Presidency Magistrate. He was a staunch opponent of child marriage and a supporter of widow marriage. In 1885, Ranade, Vaman Abaji Modak and historian Dr. RG Bhandarkar founded the Maharashtra Girls Education Society and established the oldest girls' high school in Maharashtra, Hujurpaga. Ranade founded his "Widow Marriage Association" in 1861.
