Mohammad Zahoor "Khayyam" Hashmi was born on 18 February 1927 in Raho, Nawanshahar District, Punjab.

Mohammad Zahoor "Khayyam" Hashmi died on 19 August 2019 (aged 92) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He was suffering from various age related diseases in his last days. On 28 July 2019, Khayyam was admitted to Sujay Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai due to a lung infection. After which he suffered a heart attack and died.

Mohammad Zahoor trained under classical singer and musician Pandit Amarnath while staying at his uncle's house.

Khayyam went to Lahore to find roles in films. There he met Punjabi music director Baba Chishti. After listening to a composition by Chishti, he sang the first part of it. Impressed, Chishti proposes to join him as an assistant. Khayyam assisted Chishti for six months and came to Ludhiana in 1943. He was only 17 then. Khayyam started his career as a musician in the year 1949 from the Heer-Ranjha film, Sharmaji of the Sharma-Verma ji pair. He had also composed non-film songs, some of which include "Paon Padoon Tore Shyam, Brij Mein Lut Chalo" and "Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade Pe Aitbar Kya". He composed music for Meena Kumari's album, I Wrote, I Rescite, featuring nazams written and sung by him. Khayyam's music had a touch of ghazal, but was rooted in Indian classical music. The compositions were soulful, melodious and soulful, the lyrics were rich in poetry and purpose and the style was different from the popular brand of those days, which was either semi-classical, ghazal or light and functional.
