Vice Admiral Ramdas Katari was an Indian Navy officer. He was the first Indian to hold the post. Vice Admiral Ramdas Katari served as the third president of the Indian Navy from 22 April 1958 to 04 June 1962. He was born on 08 October 1911 in Chinglep, Madras Presidency. He spent his childhood in Hyderabad. He was educated at Mehboob College High School and Nizam College in Hyderabad.

Ramdas Katari was born on 08 October 1911 in Chinglep, Madras Presidency. His full name was Vice Admiral Ramdas Katari. His father was an assistant civil engineer working in the government of Madras Presidency.
Ramdas Katari died on 21 January 1983 in Hyderabad.
He spent most of his childhood and youth in Hyderabad. He was educated at Mehboob College High School and Nizam College, Hyderabad.

After completing his graduation, Ramdas Katri was the first batch of Indian cadet-enlisted officers to join the Indian Mercantile Marine Training Ship (IMMTS) Dufferin at its inception in 1927. He topped the entrance exam. He ended the Viceroy's gold medal-earning course. Later, he was the first graduate of TS Dufferin to serve on its governing board. On 23 September 1939, three weeks after the start of World War II, Katri received a temporary commission as a probationary deputy lieutenant in the Royal Indian Navy Reserve (RINR). He was assigned to the assistant patrol vessel HMIS Sandoway on 11 May 1940 as its most junior officer. Was promoted as a temporary lieutenant on 23 September 1940, later assigned to Naval Gunnery School at HMIS Dalhousie, Bombay. On 9 April 1943, he was stationed in Karachi and was simultaneously assigned to the Boys Training Establishment for HIM and RIN.

He was promoted as acting lieutenant-commander on 30 September 1944. At the end of the war, as lieutenant-commander, he was appointed commanding officer of HMIS Kaveri (U10) and led a mine clearance operation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. . In early 1946, the 56th Service Selection Board was established in Lonavala to screen RINR and Royal Indian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RINVR) officers for permanent commissioning at RIN. Katari was appointed as Senior Group Staff Officer and later Vice Chairman of the Board. In February 1958, Katri was appointed the first Indian Chief of Naval Staff (CNS). On 22 April 1958, he was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and took command of the Indian Navy. His flag was hoisted on INS India.


The Katri Memorial Hall at A / 21, Sainikpuri, near Secunderabad, was dedicated on 8 October 2011 in memory of ADM Katari on the occasion of his birth centenary. Admiral RD is named after Katri Marg in Sainikpuri, Secunderabad, where the Defense Management College is located. The dining hall of the Katari cadet at the Indian Naval Academy is named after Katri. The Navy Foundation organizes the "ADM RD KATARI MEMORIAL LECTURE" every year.
