He was born in a Kashmiri Pandit family in 1949, Banshi Kaul was a Hindi theater director and the founder of Rang Vidukshak, a theater group and theater institute in Bhopal. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995 and Padma Shri in 2014. He received the National Kalidas Award for the year 2016-17.
