The Chief Minister is the head of the government of each of the 29 states and 02 union territories (Delhi and Puducherry) of the Republic of India. According to the Constitution of the country, the Governor is the legal head at the state level, but in reality the executive authority is the Chief Minister.

Here is a list of all the women chief ministers elected in India so far. So far 16 women have been appointed as Chief Minister in the country. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anandiben Patel was sworn in as the first woman chief minister of Gujarat and the country's 16th woman on 22 May 2014. She served as the Chief Minister till 07 August 2016. In the history of independent India, there have been 16 women chief ministers till the present time in different states of the country.
Sucheta Kriplani has the distinction of becoming the first woman Chief Minister of the country. She was sworn in as the first woman Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 02 October 1963 and she held her post till 14 March 1967. It is noteworthy that till now more than 220 persons have become Chief Ministers in all the states and union territories of India.
