Mehrangarh Fort Overview

Mehrangarh Fort, located in the city of Jodhpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan. Built in the 15th century, this magnificent fort is located on a 125 m high rocky rock hill.

The equipment of the kings of ancient Indian dynasties has been kept inside this fort. Apart from this, many attractive Palanquins (पालकियां), Elephants, Miniature paintings made in different styles, musical instruments, and an amazing collection of Antique clothes and furniture are still present here. This fort is one of the prime tourist places in Rajasthan and is visited by lakhs of tourists every year.

Mehrangarh Fort History

The construction work of this beautiful Fort was started by Rao Jodha on 12 May 1459 on a hill which was completed by Maharaj Jaswant Singh. Many birds lived on the hill, due to which this hill was also known as Bhor Chidiya. Rao Jodha was also one of the 24 children of Raja Ranmal or Ridmal of Jodhpur. He was the 15th ruler of Jodhpur.

1. This Fort is just 5 km from the city of Jodhpur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Is located at a distance.
2. This Fort is basically made up of seven gates (pols) and innumerable bastions.
3. The attractive sandstone was used to build the fort, on which the artisans of Jodhpur have displayed their splendid craftsmanship.
4. The width of this fort is 68 feet and the height is 117 feet.
5. An umbrella has also been built here in the honor of Kirat Singh Soda, a warrior of this fort. Chhatri is a dome-shaped pavilion built to express pride and respect for the rich culture of Rajputs.
6. There is also a Jai ​​Pol Gate inside the Fort, which was built by Maharaja Man Singh in the year 1806 to celebrate his victory over the armies of Bikaner and Jaipur.
7. There is also a Fateh Pol inside the fort, which was constructed in the year 1707 to celebrate the victory over the Mughals.
8. Rao Jodha also built a Chamunda Mata temple near this fort in 1460 AD and established the idol there. Chamunda Mata is considered to be the Kuldevi of the rulers of Jodhpur.
9. A part of the inside of the fort was converted into a museum, where a large collection of Royal palanquins can be seen.
10. There are 14 rooms in this museum, which are decorated with royal weapons, ornaments, and costumes.
11. Tourists visiting here can also see the four rooms built inside the fort like Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesha Mahal, and Jhanki Mahal.
12. Moti Mahal is also known as Pearl Palace is the largest room of the fort. This palace was built by Raja Sur Singh, where he used to meet his subjects.
13. Phool Mahal is one of the largest period rooms of Mehrangarh Fort. This palace was the private room of the king. Also known as the Palace of Flowers, it has a terrace with fine gold workmanship.
14. Sheesh Mahal is decorated with beautiful glasswork. Tourists can see the amazing religious figures built in the Sheesha Mahal. Sheesh Mahal is also known as the 'Hall of Glass'.
15. Jhanki Mahal, from where the royal ladies used to watch the proceedings of the government works being done here. Presently, this palace houses a huge collection of royal robes.
