What is competitive exam?

Competitive examination is called that examination, on the basis of the result of which the merit list or merit list of the candidates is prepared. If this examination is conducted to fill n places, then the first n candidates who get the highest marks in the merit list are considered 'passed'. Here is the list of major competitive exams of India:-

1. Civil Services Examination: Civil Services Examination is a competitive examination of India, on the basis of the results of which the officers of the civil services of the Government of India and the State Government (such as District Magistrate) are selected. This exam consists of three levels: preliminary exam, main exam and interview. There are two papers in the preliminary examination, out of which 33% marks are mandatory to pass in the main examination on the basis of the marks found in paper 1 and the second paper.

2. Engineering Services Examination: Engineering Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Through this, engineers are recruited in various government organizations (eg: Indian Railways, BSNL etc.).

3. Combined Pre-Medical Test or CPMT: Combined Pre-Medical Test or CPMT is a competitive exam. On the basis of its result (merit), admission is given in the medical colleges of India. One can appear in this competitive exam after passing 12th with Biology as a subject. It tests the knowledge of the candidates in the subjects of Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

4. IIT Joint Entrance Examination: The IIT Joint Entrance Examination is conducted for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology at the undergraduate level. It consists of question papers of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects.

5. All India Engineering Entrance Examination: This competitive entrance examination is also popularly known as A.I.E.E. It is organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which also conducts the AIPMT exam for admission to medical colleges.

6. Common Admission Test or Common Admission Test (CAT): The Common Admission Test or Common Admission Test (CAT) is an all India entrance test. It is a joint examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. On the basis of its merit, admission is given in post graduate courses of management in management institutes of India.

7. Management Aptitude Test (MAT): In order to overcome the shortage of qualified and skilled personnel in the management sector, taking a step forward, 'All India Management Association (AIMA)' had started the much awaited Management Aptitude and Skill Test (MAST). The first master exam was held on 25 September 2011. In the context of business and organization, management means coordinating the actions of people, using available resources efficiently and effectively, so as to ensure the achievement of goals. Management includes planning, organization-building, staffing, leading, and controlling organization or initiative etc.

8. Open MAT Exam: Many entrances like CAT, MAT, JAT, JMAT, etc. are taken for admission in major B-schools of the country. Different and special among these is OPENMAT, which is taken for admission to IGNOU operated management courses. Fresh graduates with 50% marks in general category and 45% marks in reserved category can also appear in the openmat exam. Earlier in the OpenMAT exam, it was necessary to have at least three years of experience in the supervisory and managerial category, but now this condition has been removed.

9. National Defense Academy (NDA) Exam: The NDA entrance exam is conducted twice every year by the Union Public Service Commission. To join NDA, you must have passed class 12th. Advertisements for this examination are issued in Employment News, Employment and Construction and major newspapers of the country in March-April and October-November

10. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE): The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination organized and conducted by the GATE-Committee in eight zones located across India. The committee comprises faculty from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology and conducts the examination on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

11. Combined Defense Services Examination (SDS): The Combined Defense Services Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission. Through this examination, officers are recruited in the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy.

12. Combined Law Entrance Examination (CLAET): Common Law Entrance Examination for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses (LLB and LLM) of National Law Schools and Law Universities established across India 15 It is conducted by schools/universities on a rotational basis.

13. National Eligibility Test (UGC NET): National Eligibility Test is a national eligibility entrance test in India. These are qualifying examinations for post graduate candidates for teaching admission in universities. It is organized half-yearly by the University Grants Commission. It is to be known that under the guidelines of the year 2009, the University Grants Commission had made the eligibility of this examination mandatory to become a professor in colleges.

14. Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET): Central Teacher Eligibility Test is the eligibility test conducted by CBSE. This is for teachers in schools. Under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education for children aged six to 14 in schools, the eligibility test for teachers is being organized in schools with the aim of meeting the shortage of teachers and ensuring quality.

15. Joint Entrance Screening Examination (JEE): Class 12 marks are not taken into account for determining rank in Joint Entrance Examination. Eligibility for admission to IITs/NITs/IITs and other CFTIs based on JEE rank is minimum 75% marks in class 12th or 20th highest percentile in class 12th examination of the concerned board. For SC/ST candidates, the eligibility is 65% marks in class 12th.

In the CTET exam started in the country from the year 2011, every year the percentage of success of the students kept on increasing and decreasing. However, it is surprising that out of 7 lakh 95 thousand candidates who appeared in the CTET exam held in November 2012, only 0.61 percent were successful.

10+2 passed candidates with minimum 45% marks are eligible to apply for CTET Paper 1 and those who have completed graduation with minimum 50% aggregate marks are eligible for Paper 2. Candidates who have passed B. ED qualification can now apply for both the papers – Paper-I and Paper-II.
