World Athletics Championships 2023

The 2023 World Athletics Championships, the nineteenth edition, was held at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary, from 19 to 27 August 2023. This was the first World Athletics Championships in Hungary. The city of Budapest had previously expressed interest in hosting the 2007 World Championships, but withdrew and it was eventually held in Osaka. The official mascot of the event is a raccoon called Yuhuu.

In the men's javelin throw final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal with a throw of 88.17 metres. Chopra won the first gold medal for India at the World Athletics Championships. While Pakistani player Nadeem Arshad finished second with 82m to win the silver medal.
Neeraj was accompanied by two other Indian players DP Manu and Kishore Jena in the final. Kishor finished fifth with a best throw of 84.77m while DP Manu finished sixth with a best throw of 84.14m.

Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete who is the current Olympic champion, world champion and Diamond League champion in the javelin throw. He is the first Asian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in his event and the first Asian to win gold in a World Championship.

Chopra participated in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Asian Games, serving as the flag bearer in the latter and winning gold medals in both. As of 2021, he is one of only two Indians to have won an individual Olympic gold medal, the youngest Indian Olympic gold medalist in an individual event, and the only person to win gold in his Olympics. His silver medal at the 2022 World Championships made him only the second Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. He then went on to win the first gold medal for India at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. Chopra is the Indian record holder in javelin throw.
