Konark Sun Temple History

This grand was built by King Narasimha Dev of the Ganga dynasty during the 13th century (1236-1264 AD). It is believed that the Emperor of Ganga Vash fought a major battle with the Muslim Empire in which the Muslim rulers were defeated and King Nar Singhdev built the Konark Sun Temple as a victory monument to commemorate the joy of his victory.

During the 15th century, when Muslim army looted, the temple priests took the idol of the Sun God installed here and kept it safe in Puri, but the whole temple was badly damaged. After this gradually sand started accumulating on the temple and it was completely covered with sand.

The Sun Temple was discovered during the restoration under British rule in the 20th century. In the middle of the 20th century it was placed under the Archaeological Survey of India. The ancient main temple was built in three mandapas, but two of these mandapas have collapsed. In the third pavilion where the idol was installed, the British had made all the gates permanently closed by filling sand and stone before Indian Independence.

The word Konark is derived from the combination of the words 'Kona' and 'Arka'. Angle refers to the corner or edge, while Ark means the sun.
