Nahargarh Fort History

The Fort was constructed in the year 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. This fort was built as a cool abode to protect the king from the heat in summers. This fort was the first of the three forts built by the Maharaja. The original name of this fort was Sudarshangarh, which was later changed to Nahargarh which means 'Abode of Tigers' in view of some circumstances. Presently the old structure of this fort is now in ruins, but the palace built by the Maharaja in the 19th century still exists in good condition.

  1. The construction of this world famous fort was done by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the year 1734 AD.
  2. This Fort is built on a hill, on which its walls are also covered , which connect this fort with Jaigarh, which was the old capital of Amber.
  3. This Fort is one of the highest fort built in India, this fort is built on the Aravalli mountain range, whose height is about 1,722 meters.
  4. This Fort was used during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Maharaja allowed local Europeans, British and their wives to live in this fort.
  5. During the reign of Maharaja Sai Ram Singh in the year 1868, it was expanded to strengthen this fort.
  6. In the middle of the year 1883-92 AD, a chain was built in this fort with the help of Garh Patel, costing three and a half lakh rupees.
  7. Inside this fort was the "Madhavendra Bhawan" built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh for the bedrooms of his queens of Jaipur, this room is connected by a corridor, some of which still have some delicate frescoes there.
  8. The Ancient name of this fort was Sudarshangarh which was later changed to Nahargarh by the Maharaja.
  9. This fort was used by the Jaipur State Government for its official purposes till the year 1944.
  10. Presently this fort is used as a picnic spot which is quite popular in Jaipur. Tourists come here and enjoy the cafeteria and restaurant located in the premises of the fort.
