The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema and is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organization set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The first recipient of this award was Devika Rani, who received it on the occasion of the 17th National Film Awards in 1969.

Dadasaheb Phalke is called the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He made India's first feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Therefore, in the memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, the Government of India instituted the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1969.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 Winners

Actress Rekha was given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 for "Outstanding Contribution to the Film Industry" at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Awards/Dada Saheb Phalke International Film Festival ceremony held in Mumbai on 21 February 2023. Till now he has acted in more than 180 films and has also received many awards. In 2010, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour. Rekha started her career as a child actress in the Telugu films Iti Guttu (1958) and Rangula Ratnam (1966). His first Kannada film as a lead role was Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D. 999 (1969).

The recipient is honored for his “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema” and is selected by a committee of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. The award consists of a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of ₹1,000,000 (US$13,000).
