Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a very ambitious scheme launched for the poor families of the country. This scheme was started by the Central Government on the occasion of Labor Day on 01 May 2016 under the leadership of the Prime Minister of the country, Shri Narendra Modi from Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. Under this scheme, free LPG gas connections will be provided to the below poverty line families. The Union Cabinet has approved a scheme of Rs. 8,000 crore under this scheme to provide free LPG (LPG) connections to women members of poor families.

The main objective of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is to promote the use of LPG in place of impure fossil fuels used for cooking in rural areas. One of the main objectives of the scheme is to promote women empowerment and also to protect their health. The main goals of this scheme are to reduce the use of impure fossil fuels and also to reduce air pollution by increasing the use of pure fuels. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will increase the use of LPG and help in reducing health related disorders and deforestation.

How to apply for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana:
Applying for this scheme is very simple. The application form of Ujjwala Yojana can be obtained free of cost from the LPG distribution center or can also be downloaded online. It is necessary to fill all the information sought in the 2-page application form such as name, address, Aadhar card number, Jan Dhan / bank account number etc. Within the application form, the applicant can choose whether he wants a 14.2 kg gas cylinder or a 5 kg one.

Eligibility for Ujjwala Yojana:
To take advantage of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, it is very important for the aspirant to be eligible for this scheme, those applicants who are not found eligible will not be given a gas connection. The main points of eligibility are as follows:-
- All the information given by the applicant will be mixed with SECC-2011 data and only after that it will be decided whether the applicant is eligible for the scheme or not.
- The minimum age to apply under this scheme is 18 years.
- Only women belonging to BPL family can apply under this scheme, men cannot apply for this scheme.
- There should not already be any BPL connection in the name of the applicant in the house.
- Applicant must have BPL certificate or BPL ration card.
- All the information given by the applicant in the application form must be correct.
The list of eligible BPL families for the scheme will be prepared with the help of state government and union territories. Oil trading companies will match the information of all rural applicants applying for this scheme with the database of SECC-2011 and only then will provide gas connection.
Implementation of Ujjwala Yojana:
The Ujjwala scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. This is the first such scheme of the Petroleum Ministry in the history, which will benefit the women of crores of poor families. The implementation of the scheme at the basic level will be done by the oil trading companies. This scheme will be run for 3 years from the financial year 2016-17 to 2018-19.
