History of Minority Rights Day

International Minority Rights Day began with a declaration by the United Nations on 18 December 1992. The Ministry of Minority Affairs in India focuses on issues related to minorities and also oversees the formulation of overall policy, planning, coordination, evaluation and regulatory framework and regulatory development programs for the benefit of minority communities.

The goal of the ministry includes the development of minorities. For the development and growth of minorities in India, the Ministry of Minority Affairs is ensuring the following functions-

  1. Right to Education
  2. Constitutional right
  3. Economic empowerment
  4. Empowerment of women
  5. Equal opportunity
  6. Safety and protection under the law
  7. Protection of valuable assets such as waqf properties
  8. Participation in the planning process
