Shri Anurag Singh Thakur the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, and Youth Affairs and Sports discussing the need to promote sports in the country and various schemes for development related to it, he adds:

  • Shri Thakur said that be it Tokyo Olympics or Tokyo Paralympics, India has performed better than before. He said that India has also done well in Deaf Olympics. Speaking about Khelo India, the minister said, the government has worked to change the mindset of the people towards sports.
  • He said that Khelo India Games has given a platform to the grass root level players to showcase their talent in front of the entire country.
  • Shri Thakur said that the focus is on improving the sports infrastructure. He assured that the government has not shown any discrimination towards the para-athletes. Participating in the discussion, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary of Congress said that India is backward in sports as compared to other countries.
  • He said that all the parties need to introspect on how to overcome the areas in which the country is lagging behind. He suggested that the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports should be increased.
  • BSP's Ritesh Pandey said that India does well only in cricket but is lagging behind in sports like hockey and football. Some of the reasons for this, he said, are low utilization of funds and shortage of coaches.
