Manora Fort Overview

Manora Fort is an ancient fort located in the Thanjavur district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Although this Indian state is famous all over the world due to its historical temples, some forts are also present here which have their own importance in Indian history.

Manora Fort History

This Historic Fort was built by the Maratha ruler Serfoji II between 1814-1815. Sarfoji II Bhonsle (Sarbhoji II Bhonsle) was the last ruler of the Bhonsle dynasty of the Maratha princely state of Tanjore, who ruled from 24 September 1777 to 07 March 1832.

This Fort was built to protect from British soldiers, but this fort came in great work against the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in the Battle of Waterloo in the year 1815. The fort served as a residence for the royal family and also as a light house. This historical Fort is one of the most prominent tourist places in Thanjavur district.

  1. Manora Fort is 65 km from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India. (40 miles) away in the town of Pattukottai, near the shores of the Bay of Bengal.
  2. The height of this fort is 23 meters (75 ft) and is built in a hexagonal shape. This fort is made up of 8 storeys.
  3. The name of this fort is derived from the word minaret i.e. tower.
  4. The present tower is surrounded by a wall and looks like a fort.
  5. The monument looks like a pagoda, with open windows, circular staircases and one floor separating the other.
  6. This fort is built in the Dravidian style of architecture.
  7. The restoration and conservation work of the monument was started in the year 2000 and was completed in 2003.
  8. In the month of December 2004, 5 monuments including a large part of the fort were damaged due to the tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
  9. After this, in the year 2007, the State Tourism Department, apart from renovating this structure, has some more tourist facilities like tourist shed, additional lighting, display board, planting trees along the road, maintaining the road system, a good children's park and sea. A number of additional facilities have also been built including modifying the roof structures on the coast.
  10. 3,195,000 (US$46,000) was allocated at that time by the Tamil Nadu State Tourism Development Corporation to improve the infrastructure around the fort.
  11. Passengers are only allowed up to the second floor of the structure for security reasons.
  12. This place is an attraction tourist destination for experienced person and people who love nature. It is open for tourists between 9 am and 6 pm. There is no entry fee to enjoy the monument and it will take around 2 hours to enjoy the beauty of the monument and understand its history.
