Salimgarh Fort Overview

One of the largest administrative cities in the world, Delhi is located in the country of India in the continent of Asia. The Salimgarh Fort, located in Old Delhi, is quite old as well as interesting and wonderful, so this fort has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Salimgarh Fort History

This world famous historical and wonderful fort was built in the year 1546 by Islam Shah Suri, the ruler of Suri dynasty established in Delhi. Islam Shah Suri was the son of Sher Suri, the most famous ruler of the Suri dynasty.

Sher Shah Suri had established the Suri dynasty in the year 1532 AD and after some time in the year 1540 AD by defeating the Mughal Emperor Humayun in the battle of Bilgram and established his sultanate in Delhi.

The rule of the Suri dynasty lasted for about 17 years in Delhi and after Humayun's return to India in the year 1556, after defeating Adil Shah Suri in a battle, he eradicated the name of the Suri dynasty and re-established the Mughal Empire in Delhi.

Salimgarh Fort Interesting Facts

  1. This popular fort was built in the year 1546 AD by Islam Shah Suri, the founder of the Suri dynasty and the son of the famous ruler Sher Shah Suri, on the banks of the Yamuna river.
  2. This fort was built at a height of about 24-34 meters in the north-eastern plains of the Aravalli Mountains on the banks of the Yamuna River.
  3. This fort is one of the largest forts in India, which is covered over an area of about 40 hectares and is about 5 feet high.
  4. This fort was built in a triangular shape, whose thick walls were made by joining pieces of stone, a circular tower was also built in this fort.
  5. In the year 1622 AD, the famous Mughal emperor Jahangir built a bridge to connect this fort to the other side of the Yamuna, which was broken during the British rule to build the railway line.
  6. The Red Fort located in Delhi has an octagonal structure, which was built between 1639 AD and 1648 AD by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, shortly after which in the year 1658, his own son Aurangzeb was imprisoned in the Agra Fort. After which the work of connecting the Red Fort with the Salimgarh Fort was done by Aurangzeb during his reign (1658-1707).
  7. During the first freedom struggle in the year 1857, the then Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II had a secret meeting with the freedom fighters in this fort and also led the revolution of 1857, which was later in the year 1858 by the British. Humayun was taken prisoner in the tomb.
  8. An Arch bridge to connect this fort to the east of the Red Fort was built by Bahadur Shah Zafar II during his reign (1775–1862), due to which this bridge is also known as Bahadur Shah Gate.
  9. The Fort was first used as a prison by Aurangzeb during his reign (1658–1707), who imprisoned his elder brother Dara Sikoh and his daughter Zeb-un-Nisa, who died only 21 years old. It was at the same age.
  10. After the year 1858, this fort was used by the British as a prison, in which they kept the main culprits of the revolution of 1857 and the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II here for some time, who was later blackened. Sentenced to water was sent to Rangoon.
  11. This Fort was converted into a jail by the Azad Hind Fauj (INA), formed in the year 1942, to keep its prisoners, later in the year 1945, the Azad Hind Fauj was transferred to the Indian National Army (INA). ) which used it to capture and punish prisoners.
  12. This Fort was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2007 due to its history, beautiful artifacts and breathtaking scenery.
  13. Preparations were being made for the Commonwealth Games to be held in India in 2010, due to which the historical monuments of Delhi were also being rebuilt, this fort was also rebuilt, which cost about 160,000 dollars.
