V. Shantaram was a famous Indian director, filmmaker and prolific actor. He is called the grandfather of Indian cinema. He was born on 18 November 1901 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, into a Jain family. He directed about 50 films in his 06 decade long film career. A film on the life of a brave and responsible jailer, Do Aankhen Barah Hath is the most talked about film by Shantaram. The legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram, who made invaluable contributions to the Indian cinema world, died on 30 October 1990 in Mumbai. On November 18, 2017, on the 116th birthday of V. V. Shantaram started his film career by doing odd work in Maharashtra Film Company owned by Baburao Painter of Kolhapur. He went on to debut as an actor in the silent film Surekha Haran in 1921. Shantaram, better known as Annasaheb, had a brilliant career as a filmmaker for nearly seven decades. He ventured into the Hindi film world in 1946 with the film 'Amar Kahani of Doctor Kotnis', based on the life of Doctor Kotnis.
He was one of the earliest filmmakers to realize the efficacy of the film medium as an instrument of social change and used it to advocate humanism on the one hand and highlight bigotry and injustice on the other. V. Shantaram had a keen interest in music. It is said that he composed "ghost written" music for many of his music directors, and took a very active part in the making of the music. Some of his songs had to be rehearsed several times before being approved by V. Shantaram.
He was also praised by Charlie Chaplin for his Marathi film Manoos. Chaplin reportedly liked the film to a great extent. He directed his first film Netaji Palkar in 1927. In 1929, he created Vishnupant Damale, K.R. Established the Prabhat Film Company. Dhebar, S. Fatalel and S.B. Kulkarni, who made the first Marathi-language film Ayodhya Raja in 1932 under his direction. He left Prabhat in 1942 to build "Rajkamal Kalamandir" in Mumbai.
