Yuri Gagarin was a former Soviet Union pilot and astronaut. He was the first man to go into space. It was after traveling to space that Gagarin became an international celebrity and was awarded a number of medals and titles. He made his journey in an spacecraft called Vostok 1.

Yuri Gagarin was born on March 9, 1934, in Russia, Soviet Union. His father's name was Alexey Ivanovich Gagarin and his mother's name was Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina. His father Alex Ivanovich Gagarin worked as a carpenter and his mother Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina worked as a dairy farmer. His parents had four children, he was the third among his brothers. In 1950, at the age of 16, Gagarin began an apprenticeship as a foundry at a steel plant in Hubertsee, near Moscow, and enrolled in a local "youth worker" school for evening classes of seventh grade. He graduated from flying school the next day and was stationed at Luostari Air Base close to the Norwegian border in Murmansk Oblast for a two-year assignment with the Northern Fleet. On 7 July 1959, he was given the status of Military Pilot 3rd Class.।

Gagarin was also awarded the 1960 Gold Air Medal and the 1961 De La Vallux Medal of the Federal Irononic Internationale of Switzerland.
