Jhulan Goswami started playing cricket from the age of 15. But at first he was interested in football, Goswami started taking interest in cricket when he watched the 1992 Cricket World Cup on TV. She became more interested in the game after watching Australian batsman Belinda Clarke at the 1997 Women's Cricket World Cup. But at that time there was no cricket club near her local house due to which she used to go to play Kolkata cricket. Soon after completing training in Kolkata, Goswami was called into the Bengal cricket team. At the age of 19, he made his international debut in 2002 in a one-day international against England in Chennai. His test debut was on 14 January 2002 against England in Lucknow. In 2002, Jhulan Goswami was selected for the first time in the Indian women's cricket team. In the 2006–07 season, he guided the Indian team to a first Test series win in England. Goswami along with Mithali Raj guided the Indian women's cricket team to win the first Test series, which England got in the 2006–07 season. During the same season, Goswami helped the Indian women's cricket team achieve their first win against England, scoring a half-century as a nightwatchman in the first Test in Leicester and raising their career-best match figures.

Jhulan was a member of the Asian team at the Afro-Asia tournament in India in 2007 and also won the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year. At a time when no Indian male cricketer received a personal award. Later in 2008, he took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj and worked till 2011. He has 40 Test wickets from 10 matches. In all, he took 271 international wickets in 223 matches and scored 1593 runs with three 50s. She is the highest wicket-taker in WODIs, surpassing Australian Catherine Fitzpatrick's record of 180 wickets. She achieved the feat during the women's quadrennial series in South Africa. On 7 February 2018, Jhulan became the first woman cricketer to reach 200 wickets in one-day cricket.
