Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa was the first Chief of Army Staff of India. His full name was Kodandera Madappa Kariappa. Cariappa was born on January 28, 1899, in Kodagu (Coorg), Karnataka, at a place called Shani Varsanthi. He led the Indian Army along the western border in the Indo-Pak war of 1947. He is one of the two officers of the Indian Army who were given the rank of Field Marshal. Since then, 15 January has been celebrated as "Army Day". Field Marshal Cariappa retired from the Indian Army in 1953. KM Cariappa died on 15 May 1993 at the age of 94.

Cariappa was affectionately called "Chimma" by everyone in the house. His father's name was Madappa who was a revenue officer at Kodandera Madikeri. He was the second child of his parents, his parents had four sons and two daughters.
