Sam Manekshaw - First Field Marshal of India (1973)

S.H.F.J. Manekshaw was born on 03 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab (British India) to a Parsi family. General S.H.F.J. Manekshaw was the first field marshal in the country. Under his leadership, India had won the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971, which resulted in the birth of Bangladesh. His full name was Sam Hormusji Framji Jamsetji Manekshaw.

S.H.F.J. Manekshaw was born on 03 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab (British India) to a Parsi family. His parent's name was Hormusji Manekshaw and his mother's name was Hirabai Manekshaw. His father was a physician and his parents had six children. It was the fifth child of his parents and the third beta. His siblings were named (Fali, Silla, Jaan, Sheru, Sam, and Jamie). His elder brother's name was Fali and Jaan who were engineers and his younger brother and sister were teachers.
General S.H.F.J. Manekshaw died on 27 June 2008 (age 94) in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, India due to a pneumonia disease.
Manekshaw received his early education in Amritsar (Punjab), later attending Sherwood College, Nainital. He was one of the 40 students selected for the first batch of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.
He was the first Indian officer to command the Gorkhas after India's independence. It was the Gorkhas who first started calling him Sam Bahadur. During a public ceremony in Lahore in 1937, he met Sillo Bode, and two years later, on 22 April 1939, he married Sillo Bode. In 1946, he became a first-grade staff officer and served in the Military Operations Directorate, after the partition he also played an important role in the 1947-48 battle of Kashmir. On 07 June 1969, Sam Manekshaw was elected as the 8th Chief of Army Staff of India after General Kumaramangalam. He settled in Wellington after retiring as Army Chief in 1973.
Sam Manekshaw was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1968 in the field of administrative service. Nagaland was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1968 for his unforgettable contribution to solving the problem. General S.H.F.J. Manekshaw was awarded the honorary rank of Field Marshal on 01 January 1973.
