Each of the 29 states and 2 union territories (Delhi and Puducherry) of India is headed by a chief minister. According to the Constitution of India, the Governor is the legal head at the state level but in reality the executive authority is the Chief Minister. Important facts related to the Chief Ministers of India:
- Gopinath Bordoloi was the Prime Minister of Assam from August 1947 to February 1946.
- Shri Krishna Sinha was the Chief Minister of Bihar even before independence.
- The post of Chief Minister of Delhi was abolished in 1956. The post was re-established in 1993 (by the 69th Amendment Act, 1991) when Madan Lal Khurana became the Chief Minister.
- Before 1965, Jammu and Kashmir used to have a Prime Minister and Meher Chand Mahajan was the first Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1947 to 1948.
