Charminar Hyderabad Overview
Charminar is the most historical monument and mosque of Hyderabad, the joint capital of the Indian state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Charminar is situated on the eastern bank of the Musi River. The literal meaning of Char Minar is- Four Towers. This magnificent building is a fine example of the fine architecture of ancient times.
Charminar Hyderabad History
Charminar was built in the year 1591 by Mohammad Quli Qutb Shah, the Fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Today, due to this historical building, Hyderabad has got recognition all over the world. It was also built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to link the trade route of Golconda and the port city of Machilipatnam.
Charminar Hyderabad Interesting Facts
- The English name of Charminar is "Four Tower", which is a combination of the Urdu words Char and Minar.
- To the north of this tower there are four arches and four gates.
- Its structure is square, 20 meters (about 66 feet) tall on each side.
- The Charminar was built after the ruler Mohammad Quli Qutb Shah shifted his capital Golconda to Hyderabad.
- The monument was constructed from granite, limestone, mortar and powdered marble.
- This structure was intended to serve as a mosque and madrasa.
- Its structure is of Indo-Islamic architectural style but Persian architectural elements have also been included in it.
- In Charminar, there is a terrace and two verandahs along with the balcony, which look like a terrace.
- There is a big curve in the minaret on each side, which extends up to 11 meters and is 20 meters high.
- On each curve is a clock made in 1889.
- You will have to climb 149 aerial steps to reach the last floor of the tower. All the minarets are separated by 149 Aerial steps.
- This Tower has four shining minarets, which are connected by four arches. The arch also supports the minaret.
- All the four minarets are marked with a different type of ring, which can be easily seen from the outside.
- There is also a small pond of water in the middle of the tower, in which there is also a fountain. People wash their hands and feet here before offering Namaz in the mosque.
- On the Left side of Charminar is Lad Bazaar and on the south side is Mecca Masjid.
- The Charminar is listed by the Archaeological Survey of India in the official "List of Monuments" and as an archaeological and architectural treasure.
- This Tower has also been included in the "List of Monuments" by Archaeological and Architectural Treasure.
- There is a Charminar Express train known as Charminar Smarak, that runs between Hyderabad and Chennai. It is under the Indian Railways.
- The Charminar Peak structure was built in 2007 in the Bahadurabad area of Karachi, Pakistan.
- Today we can say that Hyderabad has got recognition in the world only because of Charminar. Persian architects were also called to build this city.
