Benazir Bhutto - First woman prime minister of a Muslim country (1988)
Benazir Bhutto was a Pakistani politician who took over as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from the years 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman to lead a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation. Known as the daughter of the East, Benazir was the first woman Prime Minister of any Muslim country and the first Prime Minister of Pakistan to be elected twice. She was a representative of the Pakistan People's Party and a follower of the Shia branch of Muslim religion.
Benazir Bhutto was elected as the chairperson of the Oxford Union while studying at Oxford. After completing her studies, she returned to Pakistan in 1977 and within a few days of coming back home, her father and then Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was overthrown. He came to power after winning the election, but his opponents alleged that the election was rigged. Demonstrations took place on the streets of Pakistan to protest against Bhutto's election. Meanwhile, Army Chief General Zia ul Haq took Bhutto captive and took over the reins of governance. Bhutto was accused of killing his colleagues. Bhutto was hanged on 4 April 1979. Benazir was taken into custody by the military government after Bhutto was hanged. Between 1977 and 1984, Benazir was released several times and imprisoned several times. In 1984, after three years of imprisonment, he was allowed out of Pakistan. She then went to London. Bhutto's first cabinet was the largest in the history of Pakistan. He appointed himself as the new Treasury Minister.
Most people in the administration had little political experience. Various members of the PPP old guard, including Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, left the party in defiance of the pro-capitalist directives they had taken. In 1988, Benazir won the election with a huge vote and became the Prime Minister of Pakistan. She was the first female Prime Minister of an Islamic country. Two years later in 1990, his government was dismissed by the President of Pakistan, Ghulam Ishaq Khan. General elections were held again in 1993 and he again emerged victorious. He was sacked again in 1996 on charges of corruption. Benazir was at the peak of popularity when he was first elected Prime Minister. Her fame was as the most prominent female leader globally. But by the time he was ousted from power, his image had completely changed. She left Pakistan in 1999 and moved to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai. In his absence, Pakistan's military government investigated various corruption allegations against him and was found innocent. She returned to Pakistan on 18 October 2007. During a rally in Karachi on the same day, he suffered two suicide attacks, killing around 140 people, but Benazir survived.
