Bhanu Athaiya is well known in Indian cinema as a famous dress designer. She is the first Indian woman to have been awarded the "Oscar Award". She received the Academy Award for Best Costume Designer for a Gandhi film in 1983. Music director Ravi Shankar was also nominated the same year but did not win the award. The film was nominated in 11 categories at the Oscars of 1983. Bhanu Athaiya has been active in Hindi cinema for five and a half decades.

Bhanu Athaiya was born on 28 April 1929 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra state. Bhanu Athaiya's full name was "Bhanumati Annasaheb Rajopadhyay". Her father's name was Annasaheb and mother's name was Shantabai Rajopadhyay. She was the daughter of the third of her seven siblings.
In the first phase of independence, Bhanu's parents taught their daughter a lot in a small town like Kolhapur, and seeing her interests and talent, she was given a job by J.B. J. Referred for education in School of Arts. From here, he graduated with a gold medal. After this she was also nominated for a member of the "Progressive Art Group". When the parents saw their daughter Bhanu drawing, they encouraged her and requested her to draw Gandhiji.
Athaiya started her career as a freelance fashion illustrator for various women's magazines in Bombay, including "Eve's Weekly". Later when its editor opened a boutique, he asked Athaiya to try designing clothes, after which he discovered his temperament to design clothes. His success as a designer soon changed the way of his career. His career began with designing clothes for Guru Dutt's films, beginning with C.I.D. (1956). She soon became part of the Gurudutt team. He made his debut as a film costume designer with the film CID. In 1956, and subsequently worked with other Gurudutt films such as Pyaasa (1957), Chaudhviya Ka Chand (1960) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962). During his career in more than 100 films, he worked with Indian filmmakers like Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, BR. In March 2010, Athaiya released his book The Art of Costume Design, published by Harper Collins. On 13 January 2013, Athaiya presented a copy of the book to the Dalai Lama.
He has received many awards in his career of 50 years. He won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design (shared with John Mollo) for his work in the 1982 film, Gandhi. She became the first Indian to win an Academy Award. Bhanu Athaiya received "Oscar Award" in 1983. She is the first Indian woman to receive this award. She also won two National Film Awards in 1991 and 2002. On 23 February 2012, it was reported that Athaiya won the Academy Award. Wanted to return to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences because he felt that his family would not be able to take care of the trophy after his death. On 15 December 2012, it was confirmed that the trophy was returned to the academy.
