Hess began a stage career at an early age. She said that her stage debut took place at the Belasco Theater in Washington, as a five-year-old singer, from the White House on Laffet Square. By the age of ten, she had made a short film, Jean and Calico Doll (1910), but left Hollywood when her husband, playwright Charles McArthur, signed a Hollywood deal. Haynes attended the performances of The Old Dutch, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and others, from 1910 to 1912, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the prestigious primary school at the Dominican Academy. He attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart Convent in Washington and graduated in 1917.
