M. S. Subbulakshmi was a famous composer of Karnataka. His full name is Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi. She was the first singer in the country to be awarded India's highest civilian award "Bharat Ratna". Her sung songs, especially bhajans are still popular among the people. She was the first Indian to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. Her first recording was released when she was just 10 years old. MS also acted in a few Tamil films in her youth. Her first film was titled Sevasadanam which was released on May 2, 1938.
M. S. Subbulakshmi was born on 16 September 1916 in the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. His full name was Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi. He was born to Shanmukwadivar Ammal and Subramanya Iyer.
He died on 11 December 2004 (age 88) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
Subbulakshmi performed her first public performance at the age of eleven, in 1927, in the 100 pillar hall inside the Rockfort temple, in Tiruchirappalli with the Mysore fourteen on violin, and Dakshinamuri Pillai on Mridangam. It was organized by FG Natasa Iyer, leader of the Indian National Congress at Tiruchirapalli, who performed concerts at Chennai's famous' Music Academy "at the age of seventeen. Mrs. Subbulakshmi also acted in several films. The most memorable is that she played the lead role in the film Meera of 1945. She attended the United Nations Music Festival in the year 1966, she was the first Indian woman to achieve this feat.
