Hargovind Khurana was born on 09 January 1922 in Raipur, British India, to a poor family. His mother's name was Krishna Devi Khurana and father's name was Ganpat Rai Khurana. His father was a lawyer. He was the youngest of his siblings.

Har Gobind Khurana died on November 9, 2011 at the age of 89 in Concord, Massachusetts. His wife, Esther, and daughter, Emily Anne, had previously died, but Khorana was survived by his other two children. He was a D.A.V. High School (Dayanand Arya Samaj High School, now called Muslim High School) in Multan, West Punjab. Later, he studied at Punjab University in Lahore with the help of scholarship, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1943 and a master's of science degree in 1945.

When Hargovind Khurana came to India after getting education from England, he did not find any work worthy of him.
