Margaret Chan is a Chinese-Canadian physician, she served as the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2006–2017.

Margaret Chan was born on 21 August 1947 in British Hong Kong.
Margaret Chan was initially trained as a home economics teacher at Northcote College of Education, now the University of Education of Hong Kong. He then earned a BA degree in Home Economics at Brescia University College in 1973, an affiliated institute of the University of Western Economics (UWO) and his MD degree at UWO in 1977. Later in 1985 he earned his MSc (Public Health) degree at National University of Singapore.

Margaret Chan joined the British Government as a Medical Officer in December 1978. In November 1989, he was promoted to assistant director of the Department of Health. In April 1992, she was promoted to deputy director and in June 1994, named Hong Kong's first woman to head the health department. Chan previously served as the Director of Health in the Government of Hong Kong (1994–2003). Chan was initially trained as a home economist teacher at Northcote College of Education. She joined the Hong Kong government in December 1978 as a medical officer.

In November 1989, he was promoted to assistant director of the Department of Health. He took over as WHO on 4 January 2007. He completed his second term as Director General of the World Health Organization on 30 June 2017. Margaret Chan is married to David Chan, an ophthalmologist. In 2018, Chan joined the Task Force on Fiscal Policy for Health. One group addressed possible major causes of death and non-communicable diseases through fiscal policy. The same year, she was appointed to the Boao Forum's Advisory Council for Asia.


In 1997, Chan received the distinction of a Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and was also appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2014, Chan was ranked as the 30th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes based on her status as director general.
