Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata - India's first licensed pilot (1992)
JRD Tata was India's leading industrialist. His full name was Jahangir Ratanji Dadabhai Tata. He was the director of the Tata group for decades and developed steel, engineering, hotel, aircraft and other industries in India. On 10 February 1929, he received the first pilot license issued in India. He was the first licensed pilot of India and he founded Air India in the year 1948.
He was also awarded his highest citizenship award by the Legion of Honor in France in 1954. Considering his incomparable contribution to the development of the country, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Vibhushan in 1955. In 1992, the country's highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna was also awarded by the Government of India. In 1992, the United Nations honored him with the United Nation Population Award for his significant contribution to population control in India.
An exhibition of airplanes was held at Sonari Airport in Jamshedpur on his 114th birth anniversary. The exhibition was inaugurated by Sunil Bhashkaran, VP of Tata Steel. The exhibition also houses small aircrafts along with all Tata Steel airplanes. In addition to 10 Tata ships and helicopters, more than 30 models of small aircrafts were shown.
