Meira Kumar is an Indian politician and has been a member of the Lok Sabha five times. She was a United Progressive Alliance candidate in the 2017 Indian presidential election. Meera Kumar was born on 31 March 1945 in Patna. She is the daughter of former Indian Deputy Prime Minister Shri Jagjivan Ram. She first came to Parliament in the Bijnor Lok Sabha by-election held in 1985, defeating former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and the powerful Dalit leader Ram Vilas Paswan.

Meera Kumar was born on 31 March 1945 in Ara Patna, Bihar. His father's name is Jagjivan Ram and his mother's name is Indrani Devi. His father was a Congress leader from Bihar and the youngest member of the Nehru cabinet.
Meria Kumar attended Welham Girls School and Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls Public School in Dehradun. She studied briefly at Banasthali University. She completed his master's degree and Bachelors of Law at Indraprastha College and Miranda House, University of Delhi. She also received an honorary doctorate from Banasthali University in 2010.

Meira Kumar worked as a social worker during her youth, actively participating in movements supporting social reforms, human rights and democratic ideas. He was appointed as the chairman of the National Drought Relief Committee formed by the Congress during the famine in the area of ​​Bihar in 1967. Meira Kumar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973 and was Ambassador to the Embassy of India in Madrid, Spain. Meira Kumar entered electoral politics in 1985, when she received the Indian National Congress nomination for the Lok Sabha from Bijnor constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He defeated as a newcomer, two veteran Dalit leaders including Ram Vilas Paswan of Janata Dal and Mayawati of Bahujan Samajwadi Party. After his election to the Lok Sabha, Kumar was appointed as a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of External Affairs in 1986. After the Congress party's victory in the 2004 Indian general elections, Kumar served as the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in the United Progressive Alliance government from 2004 to 2009 under Manmohan Singh's prime ministership. Meira Kumar also held the post of Social Law and Empowerment Minister in the government of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2009. Kumar was then elected as the first female speaker of the Lok Sabha. Kumar garnered the United Progressive Alliance nomination for the 2017 Indian presidential election, becoming the third woman to be nominated for President of India by a major political bloc after Pratibha Patil.
