Pranab Mukherjee was an Indian politician who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. In five decades of political life, Mukherjee was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and served on several ministerial portfolios in the Indian government. Mukherjee was the Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012, before his election as President. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, the highest civilian honor of India in 2019.

Pranab Mukherjee was born on 11 December 1935 in Mirati, Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day West Bengal, India). His full name was Pranab Kumar Mukherjee. His father's name was Kamada Kinker Mukherjee and mother's name was Rajalakshmi Mukherjee. His father was active in the Indian independence movement and was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council between 1952 and 1964 as a representative of the Indian National Congress.
