Radhabai Subbarayan - First woman MP of India (1938)

Radhabai Subarayan was an Indian politician, women's rights activist and social reformer. She also served as a member of the All India Women's Conference. In the year 1938, Radhabai Subarayan was elected to the Council of Undisputed States and thus became the first woman MP of India.

Radhabai Subarayan was born on 1891 in Mangalore. His full name was Kailash Radhabai Subarayan. His father's name was Rao Sahib Kudumul Ranga Rao.

She was from Chitarpur Saraswat Brahmin community. He did his schooling in Mangalore and graduated from Presidency College, Madras. Widowed at an early age, in 1912, Radhabai, the landlord of Kumaramangalam, P.W. Married Subbarayan. The couple had three sons and a daughter. After which he did post graduation from Somerville College, Oxford.
Radhabai was an elected member of the Senate of Madras University. She also served as a member of the All India Women's Conference. At the 1930 Round Table Conference, she and Jahanara were the only two active members of women's organizations nominated at the Shahnawaz Conference; He unsuccessfully argued for 5 percent reservation for women in legislatures. He also participated in the Second Round Table Conference. The Lothian Committee was appointed, in which Radhabai was made a part of it to know public opinion on the reservation. She attended the second round table conference and demanded five percent reservation for women. In 1938, Radhabai Subarayan became the first woman MP of India. Radhabai was an elected member of the Senate of Madras University.
