Rani Lakshmibai was the queen of Maratha-ruled Jhansi and the first vanita of India's freedom struggle. There was a huge effort in 1857 to free India from slavery. Rani Lakshmibai's childhood name was Manikarnika, but the family affectionately called her Manu. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi was the heroine of the first Indian freedom struggle of 1857. He had just returned from the British Empire army at the age of 23. Lakshmibai was married to Gangadhar Rao Niwalkar, the King of Jhansi in 1842. Rani Lakshmibai started the formation of a volunteer army. Women were also recruited in this army and were given war training. Jhansi became a major center of the 1857 war where violence erupted. In the months of September and October of 1857, the kings of the neighboring states of Orchha and Datia attacked Jhansi. The queen successfully thwarted it. In January of 1858, the British army started marching towards Jhansi and surrounded the city in the month of March. After two weeks of fighting, the British army captured the city. But the queen succeeded in escaping from the British with Damodar Rao. The queen escaped from Jhansi and reached Kalpi and met Tatya Tope. The combined forces of Tatya Tope and Rani captured a fort in Gwalior with the help of rebel soldiers of Gwalior. Ali Bahadur II, a descendant of Bajirao I, also supported Rani Laxmibai and Rani Lakshmibai sent him a rakhi, so he too joined her in this war.
