Raziya Sultan - First lady Sultan of Delhi (Governorate) (1236)

Razia Sultan was the first ruler of India. He held the Sultanate of Delhi for nearly 5 years. Razia ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1236 to 1240. The importance of her name in Indian history is not because she was a woman, but because she was not from a big family. His father Iltutmish worked as a servant at Qutbuddin Aibak in Delhi, later he was given the post of Provincial Governor.

Razia was born to Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish of Delhi, an Ottoman slave (Mamluk) of his predecessor Qutb al-Din Aibak. Razia's mother - Turkan Khatun (aka Qutub Begum) - was a daughter of Qutb al-Din Aibak and the chief wife of Iltutmish. Razia was Iltutmish's eldest daughter, and probably her first born child.
There was a war between Razia Sultan and Mallik Altunia in which Yakut (Jamaat-ud-din-Yakut was a slave) was killed, after which Razia was taken captive. Fearing death, Razia agreed to marry Altunia. And taking advantage of the opportunity, meanwhile, Razia's brother, Mazzuddin Behram Shah, seized the throne. Razia and her husband, Altunia, fought Behram Shah to return to their sultanate, in which they were defeated. He eventually had to leave Delhi and flee the next day to Kaithal, where his army left. On 14 October 1240, both were killed by bandits there. Later Behram also had to step down due to disqualification.

At the age of 13, Razia became adept at fencing and horse riding and started going to the battlefield with her father. When his father Iltutmish died, one of his sons, Ruknudin Firuz, seized power from Razia. He ruled Delhi for 7 months, but Iltutmish's brave daughter regained power in 1236 by defeating her brother with the support of the public.

After sitting on the throne, Razia made it mandatory for male soldiers to wear coats and turbans by going against their traditions. He built many schools and temples in his state. People of all religions lived together in his kingdom. The work and inventions done by Hindus were also taught in those schools. Rakia's lover Yakut was killed by Bhatinda's governor, owner Ikhtiar Altunia, and Razia was imprisoned. While in prison, Razia Sultan Razia was trying to get out of the rebellion while some Turkios attacked Delhi and removed her from the throne.

Now Razia's brother Behram was declared Sultan. In order to save her kingdom, Razia patiently decided to get married to Altunia, the governor of Bathinda and traveled to Delhi with her husband. On 13 October 1240 Behram defeated Razia Sultan and the next day Razia Sultan and her husband Altumiya were killed by some looters while fleeing towards Delhi.
