Saifuddin Kitchlew (सैफुद्दीन किचलू)

Saifuddin Kitchlew was an Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, and Indian nationalist Muslim leader. An Indian National Congress politician, he first became the head of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and later in 1924 became the general secretary of the AICC.

On his return from the German University he established his legal practice in Amritsar, and soon came into contact with Gandhi. In 1919, he was elected Municipal Commissioner of Amritsar City. He participated in the Satyagraha movement and soon gave up his practice to join the freedom movement, as well as the All India Khilafat Committee. To protest the arrest of the trio, a public meeting took place at Jallianwala Bagh, when General Reginald Dyer and his soldiers opened fire on unarmed, civilians. Hundreds of people were killed, and hundreds of others were injured. This was the worst case of civil assassination since the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and riots across Punjab. Saifuddin Kichlu was also a member of the Indian National Congress and, for the first time, became the chief of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (Punjab PCC) and later the general secretary of the AICC in 1924. After the implementation of the Rowlatt Act in March 1919, he was best remembered for the protests in Punjab.

Saifuddin Kitchlew Awards and Honors

A colony in Ludhiana, Punjab, called Kichlu Nagar, is named after him. The Indian Post issued him a special commemorative postage stamp in 1989. Jamia Milia Islamia made Saifuddin Kichlu Chair in 2009 at MMAJ Academy of Third World Studies.
