Violet Alva - First Woman Vice President of Rajya Sabha (1962)

Violet Alva was an Indian lawyer, politician and the first woman vice-president of the Rajya Sabha. She was the first female lawyer to appear in the High Court in India. And was the first woman to preside over the Rajya Sabha. She had also started a women's magazine called "The Begum", which was later named "Indian Woman".

Violet Alva was born on 24 April 1908 in the city of Ahmedabad. His full name was Violet Hari Alva. His father's name was Reverend Laxman Hari. His father, the Church of England, used to do less in place of dead priests. His parents had 9 children, of which she was eighth.
Violet Alva died of cerebral hemorrhage on 20 November 1969 (age 61 years) in New Delhi, India. After his death as a mark of respect both houses of parliament were adjourned for a short period of time. He was described by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a united and dedicated activist for national causes. He said that Violet Alva had a blast following the women.
When she was sixteen, her elder siblings imparted her education up to matriculation at the Clare Road Convent in Bombay. He graduated from St. Xavier's College, Bombay and Government Law College. For some time thereafter, she was a professor of English at the Indian Women's University, Bombay.

In 1944, she was the first woman lawyer in India to hear a case before a full bench of the High Court. In 1944, she also started a women's magazine, "The Begum", later renamed as "Indian Woman". From 1946 to 1947, he served as the Vice Chairman of the Bombay Municipal Corporation. In 1947, he served as an honorary magistrate in Mumbai; And from 1948 to 1954, she serves as the President of the Juvenile Court. She was actively involved with several social organizations such as the Young Women's Christian Association, the Business and Professional Women's Association and the International Federation of Women's Lawyers. She was also the first woman to be elected to the standing committee of the All India Newspaper Editor's Conference in 1952.

In 1952, Alva was elected to the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, where he made significant contributions to family planning, research and defense strategy, particularly animal rights under the naval sector. He cautioned the government to be careful while dealing with foreign capital and supporting linguistic states. After the second Indian general election in 1957, she became the Minister of State for Home Affairs. In 1962, Alva became the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making her the first woman in her history to preside over the Rajya Sabha. He won two consecutive terms in the Rajya Sabha. His first term began on 19 April 1962 and continued till 2 April 1966. His second term began with the election of the Deputy Chairman on 7 April 1966 and he held the post till 16 November 1969. In 1969, Alva resigned after Indira Gandhi returned as Vice President of India.


In 2007, a portrait of Joachim and Violet Alva was added to Parliament for the first time in history. In 2008, Violet's centenary year, a postage stamp was issued by the Indian government in memory of the couple.
