Chokila Iyer has become the first woman foreign secretary of India. She is a 1964 batch IFS officer. He has also served as the Deputy Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and a member of the Union Public Service Commission.

On 19 February 2009, Iyer was appointed as a member of the New Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA). She is the first woman in India to become Foreign Secretary.
