Ashfaqullah Khan is counted among the famous immortal martyr revolutionaries of India. He surrendered his life for the freedom of the country. Ashfaq Ullah Khan was a strong advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity. He played an important role in Kakori Kand.
Ashfaqullah Khan was born on 22 October 1900 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Everyone in his family was affectionately called Achu. He was born in a family of a Muslim Pathan Khyber tribe. His father's name was Shafiq Ullah Khan and his mother's name was Mazhur-un-Nisa Begum. His parents had six children, in which he was the youngest of six siblings. Ashfaqullah Khan's family was mostly associated with the military.
Ashfaqulla Khan was hanged in Faizabad Jail on 19 December 1927. This revolutionary man became a martyr and a legend among his people due to his love for the motherland, his clear thinking, unwavering courage, perseverance, and loyalty.
In 1920, Mahatma Gandhi started his non-cooperation movement against British rule in India. But after the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922, Mahatma Gandhi decided to withdraw the call of this movement. At that time, many youths, including Ashfaqulla Khan, felt sad. Ashfaqulla Khan then decided to form an association with like-minded freedom fighters which resulted in the establishment of the Hindustan Republican Association in 1924. The purpose of this association was to organize armed revolutions to achieve an independent India. On August 9, 1925, Ashfaq Ulla Khan, Ramprasad Bismil, Chandrashekhar Azad, Rajendranath Mukund Lal, and Manmath Lal Gupta, etc. carried out their plan and looted the government treasury being taken by train to 'Kakori' near Lucknow. The incident is known as "Kakori Kand". The temple and the Masjid were the same for Ashfaq Ulla Khan. Mahatma Gandhi's influence was on the life of Ashfaq Ullah Khan from the very beginning. Ashfaq used to do poetry etc. He was very fond of it. In his childhood, Ashfaq Ullah Khan did not mind reading and writing.
The works of Ashfaqullah Khan and his compatriots are portrayed in the Hindi film Rang De Basanti (2006), where his character was portrayed by Kunal Kapoor. Chetanya Adeeb portrayed Khan in the Star India television series Chandrasekhar.
