He belonged to the first batch of students at Bombay University. He received his BA degree in 1862 and LLB four years later. After receiving his law degree (LLB) in 1866, Ranade became a subordinate judge in Pune in 1871. Given his political activities, British colonial authorities delayed his promotion to the Bombay High Court until 1895. Mahadev Govind Ranade supported the establishment of "Indian National Congress". In 1943, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar praised Ranade, giving him the status of anti-Gandhi and Jinah. Mahadev Govind Ranade was elected as the Presidency Magistrate. He was a staunch opponent of child marriage and a supporter of widow marriage. In 1885, Ranade, Vaman Abaji Modak and historian Dr. RG Bhandarkar founded the Maharashtra Girls Education Society and established the oldest girls' high school in Maharashtra, Hujurpaga. Ranade founded his "Widow Marriage Association" in 1861.
