Neeru Chadha is a famous lawyer. He is the first Indian to become a judge of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea, a judicial body of the United Nations dealing with disputes related to the law of the sea. Neeru was elected for a term of 9 years.
Neeru Chadha has held various positions for the Government of India, including an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and a Legal Advisor to the Government of India, an Advisor for the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations. Chadha was elected to a nine-year term as a judge of The International Tribunal of Law, the primary judicial body of the United Nations, in June 2015 to deal with disputes related to international maritime law. Neeru Chadha was chosen as one of the two judges of the Asia-Pacific group, garnered 120 votes, and won the first round of voting, defeating candidates from Lebanon, Indonesia and Thailand. She became the first Indian woman to be selected for a judge in ITLOS.
