Neeru Chadha has held various positions for the Government of India, including an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and a Legal Advisor to the Government of India, an Advisor for the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations. Chadha was elected to a nine-year term as a judge of The International Tribunal of Law, the primary judicial body of the United Nations, in June 2015 to deal with disputes related to international maritime law. Neeru Chadha was chosen as one of the two judges of the Asia-Pacific group, garnered 120 votes, and won the first round of voting, defeating candidates from Lebanon, Indonesia and Thailand. She became the first Indian woman to be selected for a judge in ITLOS.

The International Tribunal for Law of the Sea (ITLOS) was established in 1996, with its center in Hamburg, Germany. In which Neeru Chadha was elected as the first Indian woman member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Earlier this achievement was in the name of the late Vijay Lakshmi Pandit. Neeru Chadha became the first Indian woman judge to get a place in a 21-member court. Neeru is the first Indian woman to be elected the Chief Legal Advisor of the Ministry of External Affairs. Neeru Chadha was the first candidate to win the election in the first phase of voting.
