Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was a fighter and a fierce nationalist leader of the Indian independence movement. He is often referred to as Veer Savarkar. He was not only revolutionary, but he was also a linguist, intellectual, poet, great revolutionary, determined politician, devoted social reformer, etc. These qualities made him stand on the highest rank among the greatest people.

Veer Savarkar was born on 28 May 1883 in Village Bhagur, District Nashik, Bombay. His full name was Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. His mother's name was Radhabai and his father's name was Damodar Pant Savarkar. His parents had four children, his two brothers Ganesh (Babarao) and Narayan Damodar Savarkar, and a sister Nainabai.
Veer Savarkar died on February 26, 1966 (age 82) in Bombay, India.
Savarkar began his political activities as a high school student and continued to do so at Ferguson College, Pune. He and his brother founded a secret society called Abhinav Bharat Society. When he went to the United Kingdom for his law studies, he associated himself with organizations such as the India House and Free India Society. He also published books advocating complete Indian independence by revolutionary means. About the Indian Mutiny of 1857, he published a book called The Indian War of Independence, which was banned by the British authorities. In 1910, Savarkar was arrested and ordered to extradite India for his links with the revolutionary group India House.
A revolutionary organization called 'Abhinav Bharat' was established by Veer Savarkar in the year 1904. In the year 1910, Veer Savarkar was sent to India by a ship as a support to a massacre. Savarkar was the first revolutionary to be independent The Indian government falsely prosecuted and later apologized for the acquittal. Savarkar was the first person in India to write a history of about one thousand pages in 1907, describing the battle of 1857 as India's "freedom struggle". It was Savarkar who made the first Indian flag, which was hoisted by Madame Cama at the 1907 International Socialist Congress in Germany. Savarkar was the first person from India who, after the disbandment of 1905, burnt Holi in foreign cloth, giving the slogan of "Swadeshi" in 1906. Savarkar was the first political prisoner in the world to be prosecuted in the Hague International Court .

The airport of the capital of Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar was renamed in 2002 as Veer Savarkar International Airport. The monument is one of the blue plaques, inscribed on the India House, fixed by the Historic Building and Memorial Commission of England. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, 1883–1919, Indian patriot and philosopher lived here. In 1970, a commemorative postage stamp was issued in his honor by the Government of India.

A portrait of Savarkar was unveiled in the Indian Parliament in 2003. The Shiv Sena Party has demanded that the Government of India posthumously honor them with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena chief, reiterating this demand for Bharat Ratna in 2017, also suggested that a replica of the prison cell where Savarkar was imprisoned should be built in Mumbai and the youth should be drawn towards "Hindu Rashtra" One should be educated about Savarkar's contribution.
