Padma Awards- The country's highest civilian honors are given in the categories of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Remember, Padma Vibhushan is the second highest civilian award given by the Government of India after Bharat Ratna. At the same time, after Padma Vibhushan, the third civilian honor is Padma Bhushan and the fourth is Padma Shri.
These awards are given for arts, social work, matters of public interest, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil services. Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptional and outstanding services. These awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The Padma Awards are presented by the President at a function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March/April.
Important facts related to Padma Awards:
The Padma Award was instituted in the year 1954. The award is announced on every Republic Day except for the brief interruption years 1978-1979 and 1993-1997.
"Padma Vibhushan" is given for exceptional and distinguished service.
"Padma Bhushan" is given for distinguished service of excellent order.
"Padma Shri" is given for distinguished service in any field.
The Padma Award (Padma Vibhushan/Padma Bhushan) of the highest order is given to a person who has been awarded the Padma award at least five years ago.
The total number of Padma Awards in a year (excluding posthumous and foreigners) should not exceed 120.
The names of Padma awardees are published in the Gazette of India.
The President can cancel the award of any person.
The President gives a medal, seal and signed Sanad (certificate) under the award.
A brief description of each award winner in a commemorative brochure is issued on the day of the decoration ceremony.
A replica of the medal is also given to Padma awardees. Which they can wear during any formal/state functions.
This year the President has approved Padma awards to 112 persons. Following are the names of 10 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 83 Padma Shri awardees in this list. Of these, 19 are women and 10 persons are foreigners, NRIs, PIOs.
