National Voters Day Brief

National Voters' Day is celebrated in India every year on 25 January in front of the Election Commission of India. The Election Commission of India is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for conducting the Union and State election processes in India. This body conducts elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies in India, and the offices of the President and the Vice-President in the country.

National Voters Day History

In the year 2011, former President Pratibha Patil launched 'National Voters' Day' on 25 January on the occasion of the establishment day of the Election Commission of India (established in the year 1950). A meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the Law Ministry's proposal to this effect, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters. On this day rallies will be run on the government campus.

This Day is organized by the voters to participate in the electoral process and to increase the Awareness among the voters for this. This day reminds all Indians of their duty towards their nation and also tells them that it is necessary for every person to vote.

National Voters' Function:

Former President A. P.J. Abdul Kalam presided over the 2nd National Voters' Function at Vigyan Bhawan in the year 2012 and presented illustrated voter ID cards to 20 new and registered voters of Delhi. These voters were drawn from different sections of society and were also given a badge that read "Proud to be Voters - Ready to Vote".

The oath of 'National Voters' Day' was also administered to all those present on the occasion. Dr. Kalam felicitated District Electoral Officers (DEOs), and Superintendents of Police (SPs) with National Awards for adopting the best electoral process, and honored officers other than DEOs/SPs for doing exceptional work in adopting the election process.
