Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Brief
Every year across the country, January 09 is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India. This day is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which is why Asik came to India on 09 January 1915 for the first time after the fame of Indian father Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa by the anti-rich movement. To commemorate the day of Mahatma Gandhi's arrival in India, the Government of India declared Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on 09 January.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas History
A high-level committee under the chairmanship of Chief Legal Officer, Laxmimal Singhvi was set up by the Government of India on how to establish harmony and dialogue with the diaspora. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was first celebrated in the year 2003 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Dr. Laxmimal Singhvi suggested to celebrate this day in the year 2000. On this day, Indian people who have elevated the name of India in any region outside the country are honored. This program runs for three days. Before 2015, this day was celebrated every year but after 2015 it was decided that this day would be celebrated with a gap of two years.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Objective
The following are the objectives of celebrating Pravasi Bharatiya Divas:-
- To Provide a platform for NRI's thinking towards India, expression of their feelings as well as for their positive interactions with their countrymen.
- To Inform the people of India about the achievements of the non-resident brothers and to make the migrants aware of the expectations of the countrymen from them.
- Creating a network of NRIs in 110 countries of the world.
- To Tell the common people about the role of immigrants in the cordial relationship that India has with other countries.
- Connecting the young generation of India with the diaspora brothers.
- To discuss about the difficulties faced by the Indian working people abroad.

Who are called NRIs?
Overseas Indians are those people who are living in countries other than India. They are spread in many countries of the world. The population of overseas Indian living in 48 countries is about 20 million.
In 11 of these countries, more than 5 million NRIs represent the average population there and play an important role in deciding the economic and political condition and direction there. Here the base of their Economic, Academic and Professional competence is very strong. They live in different countries, speak different languages but play an important role in different activities there.
The Diaspora has got a shared identity due to keeping their cultural heritage intact and this is what binds them deeply to India. Wherever the overseas Indians settled, they strengthened the economic system and made their place in a very short time.
They were accepted all over the world as Workers, Traders, Teachers, Researchers, Explorers, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Managers, Administrators etc. The success of migrants can be attributed to their traditional thinking, cultural values and educational qualifications.
