State-Wise Highways in India:
The Longest Highway in India is National Highway 7, which connects the city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with the city of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, Southern corner of India. Its length is 2,369 km. The Shortest Highway is the 6 km long National Highway 47A, which connects Ernakulam to Kochi Port. The Central Government is responsible for the development and maintenance of National Highways. At present, the network of highways spans a total length of 70,548 km. The Development and maintenance of all national highways is carried out by the Ministry of Transport, State Public Works Departments, National Highways Authority of India and Border Roads Organisation. In order to boost Economic Development in India, the government has taken up the Comprehensive National Highway Development Project. The National Highway Development Project is the biggest highway project in the country till date. The project is being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India.
Achievements of National Highways Development Project (NHDP I & II) Phase I and Phase II Activities are as follows:
The Golden Quadrilateral to connect the four metropolitan cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata with a highway length of 5846 km.
The North-South and East-West Corridors having a length of 7142 kms and connect Srinagar to Kanyakumari and Silchar to Porbandar including the Kochi-Salem spur route respectively.
The 380 km long National Highway connecting 12 major ports of the country is proposed to be made four-laning.
Renovation of 962 km long International Highways. Under Phase I and II of NHDP, an estimated expenditure of Rs.80,626 crore will be incurred for construction and renovation of National Highways of total length of 14,145 kms.
National Highways Development Project Phase-III: NHDP Phase-III to make 12,109 km of high-traffic highways 4/6 laning at an estimated cost of Rs.80,616 crore connecting state capitals, major tourist destinations and places of economic importance.
National Highways Development Project Phase-IV: 20,000 km of highways in Phase IV of NHDP are two lanes with footpaths.
National Highways Development Project Phase-V: NHDP Phase-V to construct 6,500 km of Four-Lane highways on a Design Build Finance and Operate (DBFO) basis as six laning of Golden Quadrilateral and other highways at an estimated cost of Rs.41,210 crore. Covers a stretch of 5,700 km. Under the National Highways Development Project, the government has approved 5000 km of one lane medium sized two lanes. Approval has been given for widening/improving long National Highways.
National Highways Development Project Phase-VI: Phase VI will have 1000 kms under Public and Private Sector Partnership on Design-Build-Finance-Operate (DBFO) basis. The construction of expressway of K.K. has been approved. Its estimated cost is Rs 16680 crore.
National Highway Development Project Phase-VII: Phase VII includes approval for construction of Ring Road, Bypass Grade Separator, Flyover, Underpass, Over Bridge Elevated Road and repair of roads at an estimated cost of Rs.16,680 crore.
